Advantages of Skid Steer Loaders

Let’s start by acknowledging what a skid loader like the CAT 259D isn’t for. You won’t get the same breakout force, capacity, or power as a bucket loader like the Caterpillar 924 or a track loader like the CAT 953K. But the smaller size comes with many advantages. The smaller form factor takes up less space, and the tighter turn radius is helpful for work in smaller spaces. The lower weight also means less ground pressure, especially since our skid loaders are equipped with rubber tracks — a definite advantage if you’re working on turf or soft ground. The 259D is easier and safer to operate for those with less experience, and comes with a lower operating cost.

Should I Rent or BUy a CAT 259D?

The current lineup of CAT skid steer loaders starts at a 1,550 pound operating capacity (for the 226D) and tops out at 3,650 pounds on the 272D2 XHP. The newest models don’t come cheap, with many having price tags north of $70,000. You can buy used, but finding the right sweet spot (low hours, good condition, and a good maintenance record) won’t come cheap either.

If you’re going to spend that kind of money, you’ll need a use case that justifies the expense and gives you a solid ROI — which is exactly why so many contractors, landscapers, and builders in the Snohomish area rent from Link Equipment. You get the machines you need for only as long as you need them, which ends up much more cost effective for many businesses.
